'have you been eating salmon?' inquired a seven-year-old friend who had not had a lift in our car before. 'I can definitely smell something fishy!' It's true, I shamefully admit, our car has seen its fair share of fishy business over the years but I couldn't recall any exposed salmon in recent times. There was cod, of course, way back in the summer when we took to sheltering in the comfort of the car now and again to eat our fish and chips after a day spent shivering on the beach. And, come to think of it, there was more cod in the fish fingers I brought home from the supermarket the other day, via the car boot. But they didn't smell remotely fishy.
