Summary
ONE of Claude Monet's water lily paintings sold for pounds 18.5m at auction last night. The work, Nympheas, had been expected to fetch around pounds 15m when it went under the hammer at Sotheby's in London yesterday. The painting, which has not been seen in public since 1936, is one of the few of the impressionist's iconic water lily pictures still in private hands. The price-tag makes it the second most expensive Monet yet sold, outstripping the sale on Monday of one of Monet's Waterloo Bridge paintings, which had been given an estimate of pounds 6-8m, but went for pounds 17m.
Bassin aux nympheas et sentier au bord de l'eau, painted in 1900 and sold in 1998 for pounds 19.8m, is the highest price for the artist's work to date.See the full content of this document
