SIR - With the aid of some authoritative sources I wish to correct some glaring inaccuracies in Gwilym Levell's letter of May 12.

He states 'the Union flag is the flag of Wales' and 'Wales is in the Union flag'. Collins' English Dictionary (Complete & Unabridged 2003) states that the Union Jack 'is a composite design composed of St. George's Cross (England), St. Andrew's Cross (Scotland) and St. Patrick's Cross (Ireland)'. This clearly means that only England, Scotland and Ireland are represented on it which, paradoxically, includes the Irish Republic! It is absurd to claim that Wales is represented by the Cross of St. George, for the vast majority of the people of Wales simply have no allegiance to the English saint and certainly do not acknowledge him as their own. On the contrary, they acknowledge St. David as their patron saint and celebrate the fact with enthusiasm, especially on March 1.
