Quote: spotlight on... ARLENE PHILLIPS Best known for: Strictly Come Dancing. Early life: Arlene Phillips was born May 22, 1943 in Manchester. At 15 her mother died from leukaemia, and a few years later she lost her father to Alzheimer's. She moved to London and started teaching dance. She got her big break as a home help for Ridley Scott. She used to clean and look after his son Jake. While working on an ice cream commercial he needed a choreographer and asked her to help. By the 1970s she stirred up controversy for choreographing the sexy dance routines with Hot Gossip on Kenny Everett's TV show. That incurred the wrath of Mary Whitehouse. Career: From the 1980s onwards Arlene was rarely out of work, choreographing videos for Elton John and Duran Duran, as well as high profile films such as Annie and Monty Python's Meaning of Life. In 1984 she re-teamed with Ridley Scott for the fantasy epic Legend, and also worked with him and brother Tony Scott on a string of high profile adverts. More recently she attracted a new wave of fans as a judge on Strictly Come Dancing; working on ITV1's Britannia High and Flashdance the Musical. Love life: Arlene met her husband, Angus Ion, while working on a Freddie Mercury video. She has two daughters, Alana from an earlier relationship, and Abi with her husband. Don't mention: Horror films. "I'm so easily frightened, and it doesn't last just one night."See the full content of this document
