Payments to some farmers for Sites of Special Scientific Interest management agreements are under threat, says NFU Cymru. As the Welsh Assembly Government launches its consultation on the Environment Strategy for Wales, NFU Cymru President Peredur Hughes, has highlighted the union's concern in a letter to Wales rural affairs minister Carwyn Jones. 'If there is a threat to payments driven by the budget, this will further undermine farmers' confidence and commitment to conservation in Wales' countryside,' warned Mr Hughes.

Mr Hughes said farmers were told they would be compensated for loss of production or any costs they incurred if their land was designated and they had a management agreement.
