David miliband yesterday finally put an end to speculation that he might be a candidate to succeed Tony Blair, by announcing that he will vote for Gordon Brown as next Labour leader.

By definitively ruling himself out of the leadership contest, the man seen as the only Blairite with a real chance of defeating the Chancellor effectively left the path clear for a Brown premiership within the next few weeks.
