A controversial decision to strip a Welsh airbase of a key Government defence contract has helped save the taxpayer pounds 1.4bn, the National Audit Office has concluded. In a report published today, the NAO says the financial damage done to the Defence Aviation Repair Agency (Dara) at St Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan is "far outweighed" by the savings.

In 2003 ministers approved the building of a pounds 104m "super hangar" at St Athan, but the MoD then decided to move major contracts - to repair Harrier and Tornado jets - to RAF sites in Norfolk and Rutland.
