WELSH universities are cutting back spending on student accommodation and building maintenance as the funding gap with England starts to bite, MPs were warned yesterday.

With Welsh students exempt from top-up fees if they study in Wales, Welsh universities estimate the annual funding "gap" with their English counterparts now stands at pounds 61m.
