Leading figures in Plaid Cymru were privately blaming each other yesterday for a disastrous election performance that saw the party reduced to just three MPs.

Simon Thomas, the party's director of policy, lost his Ceredigion seat to the Liberal Democrats, while further north Plaid failed to win back Ynys Mn, which it lost to Labour in 2001.
