A teenager who suffered irreversible brain damage after being struck down by a virus when just three weeks old has been awarded pounds 2.75m compensation. The High Court heard that 13-year-old Gethin Davies, from Ammanford, will be dependent on others for life. Managers at Swansea NHS Trust last night accepted that there had been a "negligent delay" in treating Gethin with an anti-viral drug.

New practices have since been adopted across the NHS which means patients will be treated with an antibiotic for herpes infections in cases of meningitis.
