SIR - I would be surprised if the comments on life expectancy after retirement made by Huw Reynolds at the recent NASUWT meeting (Education, April 14) have any statistical backing, unless teachers differ from the rest of the population.

Life expectancy for a man or woman of 65 now averages 83. Therefore a person retiring at 60 should expect to live for another 20+ years (not 'months' as he suggests) and at 65 for 15+ years (not 'days'). Contrary to what Mr. Reynolds implies, there is also evidence that people taking early retirement tend to die 5 years earlier than those who go on working for longer.
