A welsh lovespoon carver is enjoying a thriving business among misty-eyed lovers - from his base in the wilds of Canada. David Western, 45, emigrated from Cardiff as a child but has kept the traditional Welsh craft alive despite living more than 4,000 miles away across the Atlantic.

Speaking from Victoria in British Columbia yesterday the craftsman, whose made-to-order spoons now sell for up to pounds 500 apiece, explained how it all started 31 years ago during a trip back to his homeland.
