SIR - Whilst it's always good to see history in these columns, the account given by Conservative councillor Peter Davies (WM, June 24) of the 1896 Liberal meeting in Newport is slightly inaccurate - in ways which illustrate much about anti-devolutionism in Wales.

Mr Davies describes Cymru Fydd ('The Wales to Be'), a moderately pro-devolution movement, as if it were simply the North Wales Liberals in disguise. In reality, the first branch of Cymru Fydd in Wales was in that well-known northern town Barry, while the early impetus for its development came from Welsh intellectuals living in England.
