Summary

Three rural schools are likely to disappear after education bosses yesterday agreed on the closure of one, and consultation on the future of two others. Mynyddcerrig and New Inn could shut within a year, while Cwmgwili will close by January 2007, Carmarthenshire County Council has decided. Lack of pupils and problems attracting senior teachers have been given as reasons. Meanwhile plans to merge Felinfoel Junior and Felinfoel Infants schools in a new building in Llanelli will go ahead from January 2007, subject to approval from the Welsh Assembly Government.

The measures were agreed by the authority's executive board, which is implementing a 10-year scheme that could see as many as 32 schools closed and replaced with larger new area facilities.
