Summary


IT COULD have been a scene out of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, when we came across something bright green and sausage- shaped, resting on the floor of Llangorse Lake in the Brecon Beacons.

It would certainly not have looked out of place in the cult movie, but the "alien droppings" turned out to be a freshwater sponge, commonly found in Welsh lakes. You might wonder what we were doing at the bottom of a lake in the first place? Well, we are a dive duo, comprising an aquatic scientist and an accomplished photographer; we are also a lecturer and a student respectively, both from the Coastal Zone and Marine Environment Research Unit at Pembrokeshire College in Haverfordwest. We have embarked on a rather unusual underwater journey of discovery, and we have chosen Welsh lakes and rivers by means of scuba diving to do it. We wanted to dive "where no man has gone before" - at least not many.
