Trade unions face a 'painful road to extinction' if they fail to evolve, a report says today. The number of workers in private firms belonging to a union has fallen to around 12% and the future for private sector unionisation was 'bleak', according to a study published by The Work Foundation.
The roots of union power such as the closed shop and threat of strikes had gone and evidence suggested that employers had less incentive to oppose unions because their impact on productivity and profits was 'modest.'See the full content of this document
