Valley Keeps Late Date for New Year

Residents of the Gwaun Valley near Fishguard yesterday celebrated the New Year - 12 days late.

When most of Britain adopted the current Gregorian calendar in 1752, the close-knit community in the remote valley held out in favour of the old Julian calendar and have been traditionally marking the old new year, Calen Hen, on January 13 ever since.
