IF YOU'RE about to set off for work, to the shops or to visit friends, take a moment to look around you as you go. Do your surroundings have an overly-familiar look? Could you, in fact, be anywhere in Britain? As we report today, the clone town is on the march. Where once there were small independent businesses on every high street, now the chain stores dominate.

And in extreme cases out-of-town clones are added on too - the same bypass taking you to the same retail park with the same supermarkets, electric good shops and discount stores.
