Summary

When it comes to transport, Wales is fast proving that it is a green land in more ways than one. Sustainable transport charity Sustrans, in partnership with many Welsh local authority partners and using a pounds 50m award from the Big Lottery Fund, is working on a five-year project to dramatically change travel habits in several Welsh communities so that local everyday travel does not have to rely on car use.

Over half of all car journeys in Wales are under three miles, a distance that could easily be walked or cycled by most people with the right environment. As part of a UK-wide initiative called Connect2, Sustrans is creating new walking and cycle routes, which will help people make local journeys in more active and environmentally-friendly ways. By 2020 Sustrans wants to see four out of every five local journeys - that's journeys under five miles - made on foot, by bike or on public transport. That's double the current levels but it is achievable and will have significant benefits for people's health, local congestion and the wider environment.
