The number of people infected with potentially deadly E.coli food poisoning has risen for the fifth day running to 68 cases. The toll is now more than double the average total expected for a whole year and experts last night warned the outbreak probably hasn't peaked yet.

Yesterday the bug spread to 27 schools across the four counties of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil, Caerphilly and Bridgend, as it emerged the meat supplier at the centre of the E.coli investigation has been shut down.

'I Want to See the End of This As Much As Anybody. I Am Very Worried About the Children That Are Ill'

John Tudor and Sons, which supplied pre-cooked meat products to all the affected councils, schools and to other council-run institutions, was shut down by Bridgend Council on Tuesday night - 24 hours before it was publicly revealed as a suspected source.

An emergency prohibition notice was served on the supplier's proprietor by Bridgend Council, which was confirmed by magistrates yesterday morning.
