Following Germany's surrender, VE Day drew a line in the sand at the end of the Second World War, but for many British soldiers still in the field - and their families back home - the war was not over.

The hundreds of thousands of men serving in Europe and North Africa were demobilised gradually on a 'first in first out' basis and many were not home until 1947.
