A good performance, but a bad result was how Scarlets' new director of rugby Phil Davies summed up his side's 31-16 defeat at reigning champions Ulster. The Scarlets opening Magners League game at a typically boisterous Ravenhill saw the visitors claw their way back from 8-0 down to lead last season's league winners 16-11 at half-time, having played the better rugby.

A well-taken try from Darren Daniel and penalties by Stephen Jones had the Ulstermen on the ropes.
