SIXTY-EIGHT years ago this month Hitler's bombers disabled the House of Commons. This time the disabling has been an inside job. In his resignation statement Speaker Martin, for whom I have the sympathy I'd have for any scapegoat, said: "I have always felt this House is at its best when it is united".

The trouble is the House was united - united in a policy of dipping their hands into the till or clapping them over their eyes. Now the greedy are shamed and the blind find themselves tarred with the same brush.
