The Welsh Ambulance Service is officially the worst performing in Britain with the poorest record of responding to life-or-death 999 calls. The ambulance service in Wales is meant to ensure that 60% of all 999, category A, calls are responded to within eight minutes.

In England ambulances are required to respond to 75% of category A calls in that time, a target that Scotland must meet by 2008.

The eight-minute target was set to give patients the best chance of surviving a cardiac arrest. Yet despite Wales having a lower target just 56.7% of all category A calls received by the service in Wales met that.

In South-East Wales the figures are even worse - only 52.4% of emergency callers get an ambulance in the required time.
