Welsh novelist Sarah Waters last night missed out on winning the 2006 Man Booker Prize for her book The Night Watch. Despite Ms Waters's novel being installed as the bookies' pre-announcement favourite, the prize went to Kiran Desai for The Inheritance of Loss.
