Nineteenth century colonists in Borneo pushed the island's orang- utans to the brink of extinction, research by Welsh scientists reveals today. Colonisation of the island triggered a catastrophic 100- fold collapse in the population of its native great apes. Experts warn that if the decline continues the orang-utan will be wiped out within a few decades.
