A welsh writer who nearly died from alcoholism has won a major prize for his latest book.Lloyd Jones's novel Mr Vogel was last night named winner of the pounds 4,000 Society of Authors McKitterick Prize. It comes only weeks after the book was shortlisted for the Bollinger Wodehouse Everyman Prize for comic fiction.

The McKitterick is awarded for a first novel by an author over the age of 40.
