Welsh women shell out pounds 3,500 a year on keeping up with the Joneses - mirroring the competitive lifestyles of television's Desperate Housewives. British housewives spend a total pounds 5bn a year as new research shows that, like the residents of the show's Wisteria Lane, competition between neighbours is high.

On average each will spend pounds 3,488 a year on a mission to keep up appearances, with the biggest chunk, pounds 1,633, going on the home and garden. The remainder is spent on clothes, haircuts and beauty products and treatments to improve their own looks.
