The Elan Valley dam, which marks its centenary this week, was created to protect water supplies, but has also helped to safeguard one of Wales' most important wildlife areas.

The dams and reservoirs were built to meet the needs of Birmingham's expanding population, but also supply Mid Wales and help to protect wildlife too.
