Summary

Two out of every three women in Wales are concerned about their safety when using public transport, including taxis, a report reveals today. The Welsh Consumer Council's research found that more than half of women had safety worries when waiting at railway stations in the evenings or at night. Women are also dissatisfied with Welsh bus stations. One of the people surveyed said she was so afraid of Swansea's Quadrant bus station after dark she always used a bus stop on a main road, although that meant walking further.

The survey highlights a gulf between the sexes, on all modes of public transport, with 25% of women saying they were sometimes concerned about safety while travelling in taxis, compared with 12% of men.
