Labour's week from hell got worse last night after Scotland Yard said it would probe claims that the late Blaenau Gwent MP Peter Law was offered a peerage not to leave the Labour Party.

Mr Law, who died this week after battling with a brain tumour, was offered a seat in the House of Lords by a 'high-ranking politician', his widow Trish said. Her version of events is backed up today by the Rector of Ebbw Vale, Geoff Waggett, a close friend of the Law family.
